Green Warrior Campaign

Colorado State University's annual Green Warrior campaign has come to an end yet again. 881 students participated in a program that brings public awareness to sustainable behavior choices on campus. By committing to become a Green Warrior, students choose to take actions such as turning off lights or using alternative modes of transportation. In exchange for their commitments the students can win prizes to help reduce their environmental impact such as CFL light bulbs and power strips. Over 100 power strips and 100 Compact Fluorescent lights bulbs (CFL) were given away in the 2012 campaign. According to the Environmental Protection Agency a CFL bulb has 25 percent greater efficiency (that is, less energy use) than household incandescent light bulbs that have traditionally used between 40 and 100 watts of electricity.

The Green Warrior campaign also helps Colorado State University move towards its target Green House Gas (GHG) emissions goal of a 50% reduction by 2020. The campaign targets behavior choices on campus especially within Residence Life where almost the entire carbon footprint of a student living on campus is a part of CSU’s. Without sustainable lifestyle choices by students, staff, and faculty these GHG target goals for the University are practically unachievable.

The Green Warrior campaign is a joint collaboration between The Live Green Team, Facilities Management, and the City of Fort Collins. With 881 total participants the Green Warrior campaign saw a 28% increase in the number of Green Warriors as in comparison to 2011. We broke these numbers down even further and discovered that 78% of the participants in Green Warrior lived on campus while 22% lived off campus. 9% of the Green Warriors achieved 90 points or over, claiming the title of Green Warrior certified as well as being entered into a raffle for a bicycle.

The top three Residence Halls per capita were Braiden, Westfall and Allison. Braiden had a 26% participation rate, Westfall had a 24.5% participation rate and Allison had a 16.7% participation rate.

This year Housing and Dining’s Eco Leaders took on the Green Warrior campaign and helped to move it forward. There is one Eco Leader per Residence Hall. These 13 Eco Leaders’ assume the title of Green Representative for their hall, encouraging others to adopt a more sustainable lifestyle.
